It is in this context that RMC assumes relevance. Few things are more aggravating to produce on a worksite than concrete. This enables the places of manufacture and use of concrete being separated and linked by suitable transport operation. Ready mix concrete is produced under factory conditions and permits a close control of all operations of manufacture and transportation of fresh concrete. Due to its durability, low cost and its ability to be customized for different applications, ready mix concrete is one of the most versatile and popular building materials.
RMC is usually ordered in units of cubic yards or meters. A boom placer can pump the concrete up to 80 meters. It must remain in motion until it is ready to be poured, or the cement may begin to solidify.
The RMC concrete is generally released from the hopper in a relatively steady stream through a tough system. Workers use shovels and hoes to push the concrete into place. Limestones are common calcareous material used in manufacturing cement. Argillaceous Materials: Argillaceous Materials are mainly silica, alumina and oxides of iron. Clay and shale are common argillaceous material used as cement ingredient in the process of manufacturing cement. The lime in excess makes the cement unsound and causes the cement to expand and disintegrate. However, it also increases both the compressive and tensile strength of concrete, so not all of its effects on concrete are bad. Carbonation is the result of the dissolution of CO 2 in the concrete pore fluid and this reacts with calcium from calcium hydroxide and calcium silicate hydrate to form calcite CaCO 3.
Aragonite may form in hot conditions. Within a few hours, or a day or two at most, the surface of fresh concrete will have reacted with CO 2 from the air. Gradually, the process penetrates deeper into the concrete at a rate proportional to the square root of time. The affected depth from the concrete surface can be readily shown by the use of phenolphthalein indicator solution. This is available from chemical suppliers. Phenolphthalein is a white or pale yellow crystalline material.
Warning: like all chemicals, phenolphthalein solution should be treated with respect. Both phenolphthalein itself and isopropyl alcohol are harmful and, since it contains alcohol, the indicator solution is flammable. Ingestion, or contact with skin or eyes should be avoided, as should breathing the vapour.
Possible effects on the human body include kidney damage and cancer.
